PRIVATE THOMAS EDWARDS


Born: Brill, Buckinghamshire, and 19th April 1863

Date of Act of Bravery: March 13th 1884

London Gazette: 21st May 1884

Campaign: Sudan 1884

Citation: At Tamaai (Tamaii) on 13th March 1884 defending a gun and though wounded remaining by it throughout.

Died: 27th March 1952 at Woodford Bridge. Buried in St. Mary's Churchyard Chigwell. Grave not marked.

Location of VC: Black Watch Museum.

Historical Background: A Naval Officer and bluejacket in charge of a Gatling gun had been killed and Edwards single handedly defended the gun and some mules against the wild rush of a dozen Sudanese. Private Edwards after bayoneting two Arabs was wounded by a spear but still succeeded in defending the gun.
